Last night marked the beginning of our junior cricket season and our first fixture for the u13s. With two squads of enthusiastic players we saw a great game play out with some excellent individual performances as well a great collective approach from both teams.
Hosted by Terra Nova Prep School, our club sponsors, the match was played out in dry conditions and it was only at the end of the night when the light began to fade, were we grateful for the pink ball that Poynton kindly provided.
Wilmslow won the toss and decided to bat first. It was a bold decision in such green conditions but was vindicated brilliantly by the captain and opening batsman Ed Pickersgill who carved out a fantastic innings of 29 retired to start the game. He was ably assisted by vice captain Matt Kaberry who ensured the run rate kept ticking over with some intelligent shot play and running between the wickets.
Once Matt and Ed had departed we turned to our younger players to keep the scoreboard moving. Through excellent determination and patience we stuck around into the 19th over. Some of our year 6 players can be very proud of their performances. They hit the ball cleanly and confidently and in time will develop the strength needed to get the ball through the infield. Hugo and Charles both hit some powerful shots for some runs, whilst Frazer Atkins and Ben Langford worked hard to stay in. This was crucial as we picked up runs through extras and singles and eventually built the score to 88 all out.
In reply, our target was simple. Execute the little things well and we would stand a good chance of victory. Bowl straight to minimise extras, take our catches and attack the ball in the field. With Poynton starting their innings well and running with purpose between the wickets we knew we would have to perform at our best. Some excellent bowling performances were produced. Zach Jordan and Frazer Atkins both bowled economically, whilst the year 6 boys all bowled with accuracy and pace. In the end the match winner was Harry Mitchell with a superb spell of 3-9 off 2.1 and a fantastic final delivery to clean bowl the last man with Poynton needing just 5 to win.
Harry was assisted by some important wickets from Harrison Boyd (2 for 11 off 2 overs) and three stunning catches (2 for Hugo Rosser and 1 for Orlando Gross) which tipped the game in our favour. We backed everything up in the field and supported each other well, even when we were under pressure. These are good signs for the season ahead, which will continue on Tuesday at home to Alderley.
